He could not move and, at first, he could not think. He was numb with this nightmare horror. Then his subconscious mind, groping under the layers of fear, sent him the message which steadied his tottering reason. There was a mirror somewhere, it said; perhaps a wardrobe door blown open. He was looking at the reflection of his own bed, and it was his own self in reflection that mouthed and stared back at him.

Gasping with relief, but still tingling with the shock, he tried an experiment. He lifted an arm and hand. The young man opposite did the same. He could have laughed then, ill as he felt, at the way he had been taken in.

Ah, but only for a moment! The Thing in the bed opposite was swift to prove that whatever it might be—figment of his fancy or visitant from some other world—it was, at least, no reflection of himself. From the hand which it raised there protruded the long barrel of an old fashioned revolver, and as the muzzle travelled to its ear it closed its staring eyes.

There was no noise at all—only a flash. And then the bed opposite was gone, and the man with it, and the light.
